i wish i'd taken a picture. alas, i didn't have my camera with me at the time. but i'll describe it for you...
i'm walking down the street in columbo with some of my compatriots from engineers without borders. we're in the industrial/manufacturing part of town, talking to suppliers about building materials. (we're building schools for tsunami orphans).
on the sidewalk, there's a kid maybe 15 years old. he has a mig welder out, old and battered and scary looking. he's welding something on the sidewalk, i'm not sure what. wearing no welding mask and no gloves, barefoot, wearing a lungi/wraparound/sarong and no shirt. he's dirty and skinny and he has this HUGE smile on his face.
it made me think of ian :)
