Here's the place to suggest songs- the other thread's for the more technical stepfile discussion. Songs need to be short-ish or with short good parts we can lift out. And mostly danceable, though that needn't mean dance music per se. Variety would be nice.
So far we've got the following on our mp3 list, plus lots of maybes:
Ring of fire, Johnny Cash
Verbal, Amon Tobin
I thought I was your boyfriend, Magnetic Fields
Monster hit, Shpongle
The harder button to button, White Stripes

Frankenstein- Edgar Winter Group (could cut a FEW cool parts out of this to use
Dancin' Queen- ABBA (oh, come on, you know you love it)
Red Right Hand- Nick Cave (this is creepy and cool, but has a driving beat that's great for step-step-step-step)
If by any random chance you want to use/hear any of these, I can upload them to my webspace for you to grab. -

Re: Song suggestions
Fri, June 24, 2005 - 3:50 PMHoly fuck, there are a LOT of people working on stepfiles out there. We must make sure to check for each song before asking you to make a file, Nicole, otherwise it's duplicated effort- unless the existing files suck, which is possible. Just to be clear, am I correct in thinking that we can use both DWI and SM files?
A quick check at bemanistyle.com turned up:
Two postal service songs (Such Great Heights and Brand New Colony)
Lots of Aphex Twin
Many files for one song by a Moldavian boy band that shall remain nameless
Badgerbadgerbadger
The llama song
Songs by AC/DC and Iron Maiden (come on, it would be funny!)
New Order
Underworld
Four songs by They Might be Giants.
Etc. -

Re: Song suggestions
Fri, June 24, 2005 - 4:28 PMKick ass, Matt. Thanks for looking!
I'm betting some of these will suck, but I bet some will work, too.
One thing I just learned about that we might wanna be aware of: Apparently there is something of a movement to make StepMania stepfiles that were only ever intended to play on the keyboard, never with feat. We'll need to watch for those. Also, I'm guessing many of the folks making steps are hardcore. We'll have to check the dificulties.
I'm thrilled that there are steps for Ana Ng.
Ohyeah, DWI and SM formats should both work from what I've read, but I haven't confirmed that by trying it. -

Re: Song suggestions
Fri, June 24, 2005 - 4:33 PM>Also, I'm guessing many of the folks making steps are hardcore.
Yeah, I'm sure. Though occasionally it will be worth throwing on an impossible step file if it goes with really good music, because the hilarious absurdity of the situation could make up for any lack of playability. We could save those ones for people we deem especially worthy of a good roasting!

Re: Song suggestions
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 3:52 PM"Danger! High Voltage" with a background video is actually in one of the official versions of DDR, Dancing Stage Fusion (the UK version). If we're lucky, we can find a rip of that song and the steps all ready for Stepmania and it'll just be ready for us. No work!
Does anyone want to volunteer for crawling around Stepmania file sites?

Yep! Naturally I thought of that already. Also, we already have a stepfile for bananaphone. Really. I think we need to get one for badgerbadgerbadger, too!
The open source implementation of the video game on which we're basing this allows us to put movies in the background for each song. The possibilities are endless...... -

Re: Song suggestions
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 2:54 PMIf we're doing an Amon Tobin song, my vote goes to Four Ton Mantis, but that's just because it's so stompy... :) -
-
Re: Song suggestions
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 4:33 PMFour Ton Mantis had a better music video, yeah, but verbal is breakbeat goodness. So it looks like stepfiles for a song can have different moves for player 1 and 2? you should work it into a routine, like player 1 stands on a square while player2 does the tapdance solo from a fred astaire recording, and they trade off. or dueling banjos, maybe. -
-
Re: Song suggestions
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 3:57 PMSerious? I always -loved- the video for Verbal.
Ian: I listened to both songs, and I really think that Verbal will work better. Nicole says she can do both though, and if she decides to cut down to one, I suggest we let her choose unless you really wanna get Mantis in there.
David: You can do different stepfiles for the same song, but typically this is used to create different difficulty levels. You'll have one player doing arrows only on beat and at a lower frequency (easy) with another player doing extremely rapid arrows with 1/2, 1/4, and ever shorter beat arrows.
I'm torn about the routine idea. It could be really cool, but then again if folks are only going to get to play for 4.5 minutes, it seems like we wouldn't wanna make them stand around. -
-
Re: Song suggestions
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 4:07 PMJust a note: Unless people see the steps beforehand, and know how to play DDR well, routine style steps usually don't make a difference. Nobody really ends up noticing, not the players, and not the audience. It was the default 2 player mode for the original version of DDR (it was called couple) and they ended up replacing it with 'battle' (both players get the same steps) about one revision later.

Important Note Regarding Song suggestions
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 3:45 PMAn important point Matt didn't mention:
Songs need to have a Very. Regular. Beat.
Not just a drummer who is trying to keep regular, but something reliable. Stepmania (the DDI software) doesn't actually key the arrows to the beat of the song. You set the tempo and then the software just assumes that the song timing is -perfect- throughout. If it isn't, toward the end of the song you'll get things like ::BEAT:: (pause) ::arrow::. You can't play that.
Basically, if you've ever tried to DJ, you know how you can beatmatch songs, and then they'll drift apart because meat drummers are imperfect? Thats the problem. This was a major hassle back in the disco days (so I'm told) and is a big reason people DJ / mashup music with electronic drums these days.
So, ideal songs will:
Have been preformed with the drummer following a metronome.
Have electronic drums but not sound too electronic.
Have a very, very consistent drummer.
If things are a little off, it can be fixed, but in the time it takes to fix steps for an off beat, we could do two to three songs with a solid beat. It's a pain in the ass.
Obviously, we also need a big beat for folks to step to.
Suggestions taking that in mind?
Does anyone know of weird music that uses a drum machine but isn't terribly electronic? (TMBG, Postal Service...?) -
-

Big Black..."Kerosene" might be a good one, it's certainly very thematic.
>Does anyone want to volunteer for crawling around Stepmania file sites?
I'll go looking. Morley already found a stepfile for a Postal Service song, I don't remember if it was the one on our list but for the sake of variety perhaps we should consider that one taken care of.
It seems there are a number of different formats for these files. Do we need one particular kind?

Re: Important Note Regarding Song suggestions
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 8:01 PMMy friend ran into that problem trying to put a beat under "white rabbit". It speeds up in the middle when it starts to climax. is there a way to "bump" the beat once it's been set? like, insert an extra 32nd note of silence every so often to compensate? -
-
Re: Important Note Regarding Song suggestions
Fri, June 24, 2005 - 1:41 PMApparently it is possible to bump things to make the stepfile match the beat, though I certainly don't know how. This would be Nicole's arena.
It seems that there is very little that is straight-out impossible, but there's pleanty that wouldn't work terribly with the "feel" of the game, and pleanty more that would just take forever to do.

Re: Important Note Regarding Song suggestions
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 8:16 PM> Songs need to have a Very. Regular. Beat.
Anything recorded after 1980 should have used a "beat track" to keep everyone on tempo, i think most songs will work just fine. If there's an older track you really really want to use, you can massage it in soundforge. it may take an hour or so but it's totally possible. and i'm sorry, but it think the vidoe to 'verbal' is kinda boring :)

Re: Song suggestions
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 4:01 PMWhile I'm at it, here's the full list of suggestions that Morley, Nicole and I came up with:
"Turn up the Silence" - Shpongle
"Monster Hit" - Shpongle
"The Moon" and "The Prince" - Katamari Damacy
"Wholesome" - Plaid
"Man, It's So Loud In Here" - They Might Be Giants
"Birdhouse In Your Soul" or "They'll Need A Crane" - They Might Be Giants
"Verbal" - Amon Tobin
"Ring of Fire" - Johnny Cash
"I Gotta Get Drunk" - Willie Nelson
"Dragnet '88" - Art of Noise
"I Thought You Were My Boyfriend" - The Magnetic Fields
"Baby Elephant Rock-A-Bye" - MC Honky
"Hand That Feeds" - NIN
"Brand New Colony" - The Postal Service
"Hardest Button to Button" - The White Stripes
"America, Fuck Yeah!" - Team America
"Inva Mulla Tchako" - The opera song from the movie Fifth Element
"Chewing Gum" - Annie
Anyone find any of those particularly desirable or undesirable? -

Oh, and as far as Amon Tobin goes, Verbal is totally fine. I just want some of that dark evil shit in there... -
-
Re: Song suggestions
Fri, June 24, 2005 - 4:23 PMIan,
You're asking -us- what can go in -your- game?
::giggle::
Last I heard, policy was that for any song where someone -else- is willing to do a decent edit, steps will be made.
Sos, If anyone -really- wants a song in, make an edit (90 seconds, preserving the beat perfectly) and msg me for the info of the sooper sekret song storage location.
Regarding Dark Evil Shit: I'm all for that. Do you know of any relatively fast, bigbeatish dark evil shit? Personally, I'd like to see perhaps a couple of NIN songs in there, but I almost feel like I'm dating myself.

Re: Song suggestions
Sun, June 26, 2005 - 5:18 PMI've been poking around and downloading stepfiles, so far I seem to have playable files for the following songs:
High Voltage
Dragostea Din Tei
Popcorn (a la Aphex Twin)
Brand New Colony (Postal Service)
Particle Man (TMBG)
Playable in this case probably means ridiculously easy- I bascally can't play at all, and also am testing on a keyboard. So those are the ones that didn't make me throw up my hands 10-15 seconds into the song. The others I've gotten are either too hard or out of sync- I lack the ability to tell which.
Also, I've noticed how stepmania handles long songs- there are "long" and "marathon" categories of songs, which count for two and three stages respectively. So if you play a marathon song that's the whole game, instead of three shorter ones. I agree shorter is better, but at least this means there are stepfiles for longer songs out there if we feel like downloading them.
-
-
Re: Song suggestions
Mon, June 27, 2005 - 12:22 PMHey Matt,
Could I get you to throw the songs and steps you like up on the FTP site so I can take a look at them? I'll try them on my home hard pad and let you know how they work.
Also, if you (or any other folks on here) feel like coming by my house and testing songs, I'll have free time probably Wednesday and Thursday night. Both new folks and those who have played before are welcome.
The main problem I've got with the "Long" and "Marathon" songs is that they're probably pretty much OK for solo play, but if we've got two folks up there, we'd have to make sure that they agree on song length and that they're both up for being in prox suits, with fire, dancing for that long. It might be fun to have one or two long songs in there and hidden from player selection (must be selected at control board or something) to show off or if we did a mini-tournament, but as for songs people can actually choose I think we should stick to 90 seconds or so for simplicity and also to give folks opportunites to bail.
How many newbies do you think can last three songs under these conditions? -
-
Re: Song suggestions
Mon, June 27, 2005 - 12:39 PMYeah, I agree- long songs should be the exception. I just though it was neat that the game handles long songs in such a way that the overall game length doesn't vary too much.
I have no idea how long *anyone* can last under DDI conditions- that's something we'll find out as we test. In addition, it's thus far unusual for me (a newbie) to last three songs even under normal conditions. FAF will give us some general idea of how much more difficult DDI will be vs. DDR given similar songs.
I'll try to send those files to the FTP tonight. I'd enjoy getting together to test steps, but maybe we should wait until after the 4th, when Morley is back? -
-
Re: Song suggestions
Mon, June 27, 2005 - 1:01 PMGood point, that is a really well thought out way of handling length exceptions. I haven't look at it in great depth so far, but StepMania generally seems quite impressive and well done, especially for a free product. The pay arcade game In The Groove is based on it, so it's gotta be good enough.
Testing this is going to be fuuuun...
Waiting until Morley is back is a good call. I'm also thinking about planning a DDI Arcade day (with carpool) to get folks a chance to play on the original DDR hardware so we can get more feedback. I'll do a new post when I'm ready to deal with that. -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Song suggestions
Tue, June 28, 2005 - 1:38 AMAnother field trip would be nice. We went to an arcade a while back to check out the machine and measure parts and things like that. I'd like to go back, though. I've only played on arcade pads like twice (honestly, I suck at DDR), so it'd be good to get another look at how they work. -
-
Re: Song suggestions
Tue, June 28, 2005 - 9:10 AMOK, so I totally forgot to upload the stepfiles. But it occurs to me that it's just as easy for you to download them straight from the source, as long as you don't mind registering. So here are the links to those files on bemanistyle.com. At least some of these artists have other stepfiles there you could check out....I downloaded some but couldn't handle most of the others! I couldn't get the Ana Ng file to work, maybe you'll have better luck.

Re: Song suggestions
Tue, June 28, 2005 - 11:24 AMCool. That definately sounds worth doing. Ian, what part of the bay would you suggest we do this in? I'd like to do someplace with at least two machines as more folks would get to play more songs, plus we could just take up a machine without getting in the way too much. That means either Portal at the Metreon or one of the Golfland locations. Sunnyvale Golfland (SVGL) is a traditional DDR mecca, but it's also 45 minutes away. How does the afternoon of Sunday the 10th sound? -
-
Re: Song suggestions
Tue, June 28, 2005 - 12:33 PMI can do the 10th, and Morley and Jonathan will be back then (they both return on the 4th). I don't know what their schedules are like, though.
My vote goes for the Metreon, since it doesn't involve running all the way down to Sunnyvale. :)

(I just got back from 2 weeks out of the country, sorry for the delays in getting in touch!)
Seriously, having someone who knows DDR and can get us stepfiles for other songs is invaluable. I am so happy we won't just have to use standard DDR tunes. As great as some of them are, I want more variety than that. So THANK YOU for helping us out!!!!
