I have no idea how long *anyone* can last under DDI conditions- that's something we'll find out as we test. In addition, it's thus far unusual for me (a newbie) to last three songs even under normal conditions. FAF will give us some general idea of how much more difficult DDI will be vs. DDR given similar songs.

I'll try to send those files to the FTP tonight. I'd enjoy getting together to test steps, but maybe we should wait until after the 4th, when Morley is back?

Hey Matt,

Could I get you to throw the songs and steps you like up on the FTP site so I can take a look at them? I'll try them on my home hard pad and let you know how they work.

Also, if you (or any other folks on here) feel like coming by my house and testing songs, I'll have free time probably Wednesday and Thursday night. Both new folks and those who have played before are welcome.

The main problem I've got with the "Long" and "Marathon" songs is that they're probably pretty much OK for solo play, but if we've got two folks up there, we'd have to make sure that they agree on song length and that they're both up for being in prox suits, with fire, dancing for that long. It might be fun to have one or two long songs in there and hidden from player selection (must be selected at control board or something) to show off or if we did a mini-tournament, but as for songs people can actually choose I think we should stick to 90 seconds or so for simplicity and also to give folks opportunites to bail.

How many newbies do you think can last three songs under these conditions?

Dragostea Din Tei
Popcorn (a la Aphex Twin)
Brand New Colony (Postal Service)
Particle Man (TMBG)

Playable in this case probably means ridiculously easy- I bascally can't play at all, and also am testing on a keyboard. So those are the ones that didn't make me throw up my hands 10-15 seconds into the song. The others I've gotten are either too hard or out of sync- I lack the ability to tell which.

Also, I've noticed how stepmania handles long songs- there are "long" and "marathon" categories of songs, which count for two and three stages respectively. So if you play a marathon song that's the whole game, instead of three shorter ones. I agree shorter is better, but at least this means there are stepfiles for longer songs out there if we feel like downloading them.

David: You can do different stepfiles for the same song, but typically this is used to create different difficulty levels.

An important point Matt didn't mention:

Songs need to have a Very. Regular. Beat.

Not just a drummer who is trying to keep regular, but something reliable. Stepmania (the DDI software) doesn't actually key the arrows to the beat of the song. You set the tempo and then the software just assumes that the song timing is -perfect- throughout. If it isn't, toward the end of the song you'll get things like ::BEAT:: (pause) ::arrow::. You can't play that.

Basically, if you've ever tried to DJ, you know how you can beatmatch songs, and then they'll drift apart because meat drummers are imperfect? Thats the problem. This was a major hassle back in the disco days (so I'm told) and is a big reason people DJ / mashup music with electronic drums these days.

So, ideal songs will:
Have been preformed with the drummer following a metronome.
Have electronic drums but not sound too electronic.
Have a very, very consistent drummer.

If things are a little off, it can be fixed, but in the time it takes to fix steps for an off beat, we could do two to three songs with a solid beat. It's a pain in the ass.

Obviously, we also need a big beat for folks to step to.
