DDI is going to be made out of stuff. We'll buy the stuff if we have to, but first we want to try to scrounge it, since it leaves more room in the budget to make this project really fucking cool.
Here's our (partial) shopping list. If you have any of this stuff and you're willing to donate it (or sell it cheap!) we'll be your best friend!
twelve (12) automotive spark coils
barbed wire
t-stakes
lined, aluminized proximity suits (hey, you never know)
plywood
2x4's
heavy duty extension cords, lots of them
reasonably bright video projector (yeah, right)
self-powered speakers
subwoofer
propane
fluorescent lights/fixtures (2)
garden gate for perimeter fence
USB hub
512 mb USB flash disk
incandescent lightbulbs (20)
incandescent light fixtures/sockets (20)
fabric suitable for a video screen (15ft x 10ft)
100lb propane tanks
20lb propane tanks for accumulators
med. sized utility trailer, 500lb max tongue weight - can be BORROWED!
stands for lights
high-pressure propane hose, 1/4", 1/2", or 3/8"
lighting gels, esp. red, orange, and blue
black and yellow paint
candy beads, bits of colorful fabric, and pacifiers (to decorate the perimeter!)
a USB joystick/joypad we can take apart
aluminum diamond plate
keyswitch

Much less than a duck's worth.

Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 9:20 AMFor your "fabric suitable for a video screen (15ft x 10ft)" need, may I suggest used billboard vinals. They are free, generly come 14'x48', and are white/blank on one side. They also make great tarps, and groundcover. Put one down then set up you camp over it, makes a commen area very cleanable and reduces dust. I will be getting some befor the event, I can get extra or you can get your own its near NIMBY.
I also have yellow and red triangles made from vinal 6' per side, the look like the flags a used auto lot would string up, without the string. -

That should be, 6" not 6' per side.
BTW spellcheck is not working.:^(

Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 12:51 PMAhh, billboard vinyl - BRILLIANT! And cheap, too! If you could grab us one when you're getting yours, that would be great. One less thing for us to run around tracking down, and at no great increased burden to you. How much do they cost? Or are they *crosses fingers* of the obtanium free variety?
14'x48' would be perfect size. We could make a screen that's 14' wide by 10' tall, AND have plenty leftover for light blocking material for the proxsuit dressing area. Genius! Thank you gxaoui! -

Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 2:26 PMI think Morley means "a number of sections that are fourteen feet by forty-eight inches." Morley, is that right, or did you actually mean 48' long? -

We must make sure to avoid the "Stonehenge effect!"
-
Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 4:53 PMfourteen feet wide by forty eight feet long, assuming i read GXAOUI's original dimensions right and he meant *feet* not inches.
that's enough for a screen and plenty of leftovers with which to make the dressing area and other random stuff. -
-
Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 5:37 PMCorrect, the average size is 14 feet by 48 feet. some may be slightly different, but they are generally that large.

Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 3:01 PMThe billboards are free, I will get a few extra, not an issue.
They work very well, last year the fence at H2O boy was made with them using 4x4 uprights and 2x4 crossbeams. They were able to withstand the windstorms. We pre-painted them in sections and used an air stapler with 1"x1" staples to put them up.
They are bulky and a whole 14’x48’ weighs around 120#.

Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 2:24 PMSome other items to add:
Access to a shear. It doesn't need to be very heavy or large, as it's mostly for short sections of .063" (or thereabouts) aluminum sheet. Hand-operated would be fine (not that I'd mind using a hydraulic one, though).
Also, Matt could use a couple hours with a small lathe to make some pieces for the respirator system. He'd be cutting some ~3" discs from 0.5" HDPE, so once again, not a very demanding application. -

Covered- CTP has access to a lathe. Thanks, CTP! Yay!

If you don't have it, CTP, I may. We took down one or two in the garage, when we had the house rewired.
Let me check downstairs tomorrow, and I'll let you know, Ian.

Re: DDI wish list
Fri, June 17, 2005 - 1:17 PMAt one point we had hundreds of white LEDs around the house, would those be useful instead of flourescents? i would guess they use less power... -
-
Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 1:12 AMNaa... fluorescent tubes are actually a little more effecient than white LEDs, believe it or not.
Effeciency isn't really a concern for us here, though. Simplicity is more important. We'll be sucking ridiculous quantities of power for other things, so a couple watts in the dressing area isn't going to make much difference either way.
*however*, I'd imagine I could use a bunch of white LEDs for the pad lights if you'd be willing to part with them. I think I would need quite a few, though, probably at least 32, and 64 would be even better. I can't imagine anyone giving away that many, since the buggers are so expensive. :) -
-
Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 10:09 AMWe found a new source for them in Hong Kong - I'll send you the deets later today - damned inexpensive for all colors.
And on the efficiency note - anecdotally speaking, you can get a metric fuckton more "useable" light out of one $3 fluorescent tube than $100 worth of LEDs. Electrically, on a test bench the LEDs may be more "efficient", but not as practical in real world apps. -

Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 10:21 AMI'd just like to take this opportunity to say that I fully support our conversion to using metric fucktons instead of antiquated English units such as the "shitload" and the "hell of a lot." -
-
Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 1:45 PMI will also be using the "metric yay-long" whenever possible. Of course if we goof our conversions DDI may end up crash landing in Gerlach.

Re: DDI wish list
Wed, June 15, 2005 - 2:58 PMI've got a USB joystick for yah. It's a quality-but-simple one I bought for playing MAME on my PowerBook. It should be perfect.
If you still need another and could used a joystick, I might be able to scrounge one. Also, I have a PS2 to USB converter for you. It will let you use any PS2 DDR pad with StepMania. I figure it won't be a bad thing to have around for testing, backup, whatever. -
-
Re: DDI wish list
Thu, June 16, 2005 - 2:42 AMThe joystick we can definitely use. Do you know, offhand, how many buttons it has?
The PS2->USB device, less so. We already have two of those. :) -
-
Re: DDI wish list
Fri, June 17, 2005 - 1:12 PMIt's this one:
www.amazon.com/exec/obido...643-8097469
So, apparently, 10 buttons. I suppose you could run both pads from it, so long as you don't need more than 2 USB control buttons for each pad. Otherwise, It's certainly enough to run one pad and a slew of control buttons.
Just let me know how you'd like me to get it to you. -
-
Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 1:16 AMYa, we'll probably need two then, but I certainly won't scoff at getting one for free. But wait! I count 14 buttons on that thing, including the left-side directional pad (which counts as four). Last I checked, we need 12, so it might do on its own.
You realize that I'll have to destroy the thing to use it, and you couldn't possibly ever have it back, yes? :)
As far as getting it from you: I won't need it til I have at least one pad built. Why don't I do that, then I can get in touch with you and have you over to the shop to modify the joystick and test out the pad? -
-
Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 2:57 AMSo my offer is:
all the yellow paint you could ever need (and then some), plus probably a number of other playa-related art project gear that you desperately need (and some that you probably don't even realize that you need yet) in return for the use of some sort of pickup truck or box van or similar for a day, and one able-bodied sentient to help move some stuff.
Can be scheduled at the convenience of the DDI collective hive-mind.

Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 2:45 PMWell, well. We just happen to have a pickup truck.
We should talk when Morley returns from Sri Lanka. She gets back on July 4th. -
-
Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 3:19 PMI thought I'd heard something about a recent truck aquisition. Cool.
Whenever we hook up, come prepared to cherry pick. I've got a genny I may not need this year (TBD), a bunch of heavy-duty extension cables, tons of gas cans, rope, work lights, tools, hardware, dust, rust, more dust, first-aid kits, propane tanks, a propane heat lamp, dust, and still yet more dust.
So bring a shopping list.

Re: DDI wish list
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 1:15 PMHuh, I didn't even think to double check the number of buttons, I just went with the description. I guessed that they meant the 4 directions, 4 round face buttons, and two oval center buttons. I forgot about the shoulders. I guess they didn't count the direction buttons. In that case, assuming that I am remembering correctly about 4 shoulder buttons, you would have fourteen, giving three control buttons for each pad.
Cool!
I'll double check when I get home.
As for it's fate: Yeah, I don't use it anymore. Next time I get into MAME, I'm building a cabinet. I look forward to taking it appart, screwing with it, and soldering things to it.
I'll be glad to swing by to modify and test things out when you're ready. I should note: I am actually pretty poor at DDR. I can get in touch with folks who are good at it, though.
FYI, I've found the new Coldheat ceramic, handheld, battery powered soldering irons really great for pad wiring.

Re: DDI wish list
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 4:00 PMWe don't, and that is a good deal! Though what we have is two medium-ish ones, so ideally we're looking for one larger and one smaller. The latter might not exist, but the former sure does. I'll call them, though, see what they say. If they have something we can use, we could get someone heading out to the playa for the 4th to grab them on the way through Reno.
Thanks!
