(new thread)

Reed suggests we all take a trip to the arcade to play DDR and get a feel for the arcade machines. I'm up for it. We did it once a while ago, but I could use a little refresher, and I want to see how the lights work and stuff.

The current suggestion is for Sunday, July 10, at either the Metreon or Sunnyvale Golf Land.

I think either sunnyvale golfland or milpitas golfland would be better than metreon. The pads are in better shape, it's cheaper to play, and refreshments aren't quite as expensive as at the metreon. I'd be up for driving people in my car-type device, which seats about 5!

      Prices for the arcades:

      Metreon:
      US 1st Mix $1.00/3 songs
      DDR EXTREME $1.50/5 songs

      SVGL:
      DDR EXTREME 5 songs/4 tokens
In the Groove 3 songs/4 tokens

      MGL:
DDR EXTREME 2 Tokens for 4 songs
4th Mix Plus 2 Tokens for 5 songs
In the Groove 4 Tokens for 3 songs

Tokens get cheaper as you buy more, so a 4 song game at milpitas golfland costs between 38-50 cents. Also, if you arent used to the game, less songs per play is probably better, as you'll get tired pretty quick. I personally don't like playing more than 3 songs in a row, myself.

I'm up for a field trip! This should be fun! Folks, give it a shot on the original hardware, it really is a good time and we can all be clueless in numbers.

I'd second a recomendation for Golfland, especially Milpitas (good call, Nicole.)

The Metreon is nearby, but it has been extremely crowded lately and it is very expensive on weekends ($1.50 per play). We would spend a -lot- of time waiting for turns. It has two machines, one modern one with in mediocre shape and one that is 7 years old and basically just sucks.

Sunnyvale Golfland is farther off, but it costs 4 tokens (a bit less than a dollar) to play and is less crowded than the Metreon. They have 2 DDR machines, both in really good shape.

Milpitas Golfland is just slightly farther from Svgl, but it costs two tokens to play and has three DDR machines. It was also entirely deserted when I was there last Sunday. We can just set up shop there and folks will leave us alone. I get self concious around folks who are really good at the game, so I like to play here where I can be clumsy in my own little corner.

If we can get another decent sized car (or two at the most) we'll be able to get pleanty of people down there. I bet I know someone I could convice.

      What do folks think?

        I am intrigued.
I first was visited with humiliation upon the machine at Milpitas Golfland, and so would be interested in a second round, maybe with less little teenage DDR-whizzes around.

I'm in. I'm a total novice, I've never played DDR and I've done stepmania a grand total of maybe three times at home on Morley's squishy DDR pad. I like the idea of going somewhere where we can have a machine as much to ourselves as possible; I, too, am prone to self-consciousness when making a total fool of myself in public.

I can drive if we need a second car- mine will carry four. I need to be back home around 6-7PM.

I propose we offer an added feature for the Arcade DDR machine:

            The Newbie Sheild

When someone new is playing, we will all stand shoulder to shoulder around the periphery of the machine, blocking the player from the view of anyone who might actually be good at DDR.

I am tall and broad of shoulder, and will be glad to help offer this service if I can also partake of it.

Nicole, I think this means you'll spend a lot of time standing behind me. ::grin::

It sounds like Sunday the 10th @ Milpitas Golfland is pretty good so far, as I'd previously discussed this date with a couple other folks. If no one has any major problems with this, I'll post it as an event listing tomorrow. We can meet at my house (11th and Kirkham, off the Muni N line). How's 11:30am?

Matt, if you can drive too that'll give us 2-3 cars, which should do it. Cool.

or how about someone create a flyer explaining the project, punching up the flamethrower aspect, so when the DDR kIdDeEz crowd around they can read what's up and instead of thinking all the old folks are lame, actually get interested and involved?

Okay, it sounds like Milpitas Golfland is the place. July 10th.

I'd imagine Jonathan could drive as well, if necessary. Where shall we all meet? Jonathan and I are in SF, but can come to the East Bay easily enough.

I'll have room in my car for me plus 4.

Only if we can set you on fire first.

Look who's coming. Fire almost seems redundant.

I can just envision the first recorded incidence of minigolf resulting in triple paralysis before the 7th hole.

I had to laugh outloud when I pictured someone in a silver suit running amok around the golf course...coated with something flamable and ignited of course...as we all calmy play through barely noticing the mayhem

If we have both Oakland and SF people driving, should we have one meeting place in the East Bay (Maybe Lake Merrit or Mac Arthur Bart?) and another in SF, then doing the final meetup at Milpitas Golfland? Or is everyone ok with leaving from my house in the Inner Sunset?
