Hey everyone! I'm back from Sri Lanka and ready to buckle down and get this bitch workin'.
In talking with Ian, Matt & Jonathan, I've deduced something quite important: HOLY SHIT we have a lot of work to do before FAF!
In the spirit of HOLY SHIT I would like to bring to the table the subject of July 10th. I know plans have been set in motion for an arcade trip to Milpitas. It appears that at least the core DDI crew may have to bail on that to work on the game at NIMBY instead.
If other folks still want to go to the arcade and practice, they are more than welcome. Another option is you can come to NIMBY and play on *our* pad when it's finished (or, if nothing else, on Morley's softpad). This will allow you to get a feel for the game for free if you've never played. It's not like in the arcade, but hey, there are arrows and music and shit.. and you can dance to bananaphone!
So: Field trip, work day, or both? Thoughts?
It's nice to be back.. ahhh the smell of propane..

Re: July 10: Field trip, work day, or both?
Tue, July 5, 2005 - 1:08 AMOh.. and, um, if you come to NIMBY instead on the 10th you can, like, build DDI and stuff. I forgot to explain that part. Play with powertools! (Or just paint.. there's a wide range of technical to non-technical stuff that needs to be done). -

Re: July 10: Field trip, work day, or both?
Tue, July 5, 2005 - 1:17 AMYeah, I was reaching the same conclusion myself- every day counts at this point and we can't afford to lose most of a weekend day. I move that we reschedule to the first weekend after FAF- Jul 23rd or 24th.

Re: July 10: Field trip, work day, or both?
Tue, July 5, 2005 - 9:25 AMI've blocked out the 10th to help with DDI and could go either way, work at NIMBY or practice at Milpitas. I would like to bring Nick, my 16-yr. old Little Brother along as he knows DDR much better than I do and loves the idea of things on fire. Powertools, cool music, DDR, and fire. Sounds like a good day all around.

Re: July 10: Field trip, work day, or both?
Tue, July 5, 2005 - 8:10 AMWelcome back Morley!
One thing I wanted to point out is that while playing in the arcade is certainly gonna be fun, I'd been thinking of it as a productive thing as well.
I personally have four goals for getting everyone to the arcade:
1) Get folks time on the pads. It'll be way easier for folks to give input once they have a handle on how the official original game works.
2) Let Nicole see what sort of steps folks need. It'd suck to have her make a bunch of steps that don't fit the audience. If she can watch what folks can do, she can make steps they can do.
3) Go over the arcade hardware with Ian. This will help with tuning and stuff. Pad feel is weird, it's good to have solid idea of how the arcade one works.
So, I think the field trip is at least kind of important, but obviously having a built and working DDI is probably the priority. I'm amazed we found a day that so many folks can make it, so... Is there any way to make both happen?
Could Saturday be the big work day, and then Sunday be the arcade day? I can be there day and night Saturday.
If that wouldn't give enough time, maybe we could shift arcade day to arcade evening? Could folks show up at Nimby around 10am and work on DDI 'til 4 or 5, at which point we can go down to Milpitas, play DDR in the arcade, and eat the lovely Golfland pizza? -

Mmmm....golfland pizza! I wouldn't be able to do Sunday night, I have a standing commitment every Sunday.
While I agree that playing arcade DDR would definitely be a productive thing as well as fun, it falls in the category of "making things better" as opposed to just making them in the first place. Right now we're concerned mostly with the latter. Speaking for myself, I can say that I'd be completely unable to pay attention to or enjoy a trip to the arcade this weekend, knowing that there was still stuff to do on DDI and the Fire Arts Festival only 3-4 days away (by then). Eeeek!

Re: July 10: Field trip, work day, or both?
Tue, July 5, 2005 - 9:29 AMI agree that getting to the arcade would be helpful in lots of ways. However, for at least 1 and 2 these can happen after FAF. Building the pads, getting respirators working, and making flamethrowers, however, cannot happen after FAF.
Realistically, if we start work around 10am on DDI here at NIMBY, breaking at 4 or 5pm will probably throw a wrench in our productivity. We won't start really making solid progress until the afternoon when people are oriented and know what they're doing. Speaking from experience with a bman art project work day or five last summer, it makes more sense to block out the entire day until after dinnertime if you really want to make the most of it.
We could play it by ear for Sunday, though.. if Saturday is hugely productive, perhaps Sunday could still happen? (Though the fire jam is Sunday night, and at least some contingent of the DDI folks will have to be at NIMBY to run that). -

Re: July 10: Field trip, work day, or both?
Tue, July 5, 2005 - 10:03 AMWell rats, it sounds like this probably won't work then. I doubt that anyone would really wanna play without y'all, and I wouldn't want to occupy anyone who would otherwise be working anyway.
Let me know how the weekend shapes up and what you'll be wanting help with.

Tue, July 5, 2005 - 9:03 AMIf you can use some hands that can follow directions, I'm in for July 10. Let me know what time to be at NIMBY. -

I think it's safe to say we'll be able to use the help. We'll let you know what time when the weekend is closer. Thanks, Robyn!
