last minute heads up: come play DDI at NIMBY *tonight* (April 25, 2009)

We're running DDI at NIMBY tonight as part of the "How to Destroy the Universe" party. It's already started, as of 5 pm, but DDI itself is warming up now and will be running for the next few hours. So, come on down, now that it's dark, and play with us!

This is likely the only American run DDI will be making this year, as the game has been invited to Denmark for the summer.

It's been two years since our last run, so join the fun!

In Rez, one's character soars over psychedelic, abstract, futuristic vistas to the hypnotic beats of electronic music. The game is tightly integrated with sight and sound." It takes about one hour to complete.

A friend of mine - whom you all may know - who is on the DDI 'team' insists that DDI has never gotten him laid.
I find this difficult to believe, as DDI has gotten _me_ laid, and I'm not even involved.
Is he being modest?

Ever get that urge to burn someone alive?

Looking for a way to combat Playa Boredom?

Wanna wear a cool nomex flight suit with that slick DDI logo firmly planted on you back? (or perhaps silkscreened on your buttocks?)

Does you think aluminum foil is the perfect playa costume accessory?

Have you, or anyone in your family been diagnosed with mental Illness?

If you answered yes or no to any one of these questions, then Camp DDI is for you! We'll be hauling this one of a kind human barbecue out to the playa once again this year, and we're looking for a few bad-ass individuals to camp with us. Come to the dark side -- We have cookies! We have propane flavored antics! We're looking fro YOU!

Did anyone happen to take a photo of my flat-black BMW r1100GS motorcycle (the one with the antlers up front) that spent the week parked near the back corner of the shade structure last year?

Any pix welcome: me with bike, bike alone, bike's exhaust pipe being cornholed by Chris Ory when I wasn't looking. Anything will do, really.

Much thanks. One love. Namaste, y'all.

Allison Lange & Interpretive Arson

As many of you may have heard already, it was discovered that Allison Lange died sometime over the weekend or perhaps as late as Monday. Most of here in DDI land knew Allison and some of us here were quite close to her, myself included. Allison introduced me Ian, at Jonathan's going-away party, in fact, (his first one, many years ago) and you know the rest of the history there. She is also, indirectly, the way that I came to know Reed, Colin, Nifer and Slim. She introduced Nicole to this community in many ways. She helped plan Tastee Flame, our first fundraiser, two years ago. She, not Ian or Jonathan like you maybe would have expected, invited me to it, actually. I worked the door. It's how I got involved in this project, really. It made this wacky thing that Ian was telling me about on the phone sometimes a reality for me. It was what made, a year later, me wanting to plan this camp, possible. I met Cubes, from You Are That Pig, there. My subsequent friendship with Cubes is what started the connection between DDI and You Are That Pig. What I'm trying to say is that Allison was tremendously important Interpretive Arson, whether you knew that or not and her passing is a tremendous loss to everyone on this list. She will not be forgotten by us at Interpretive Arson. I don't know what we're going to do to memorialize her at BM or beyond just yet, but I know that we will do something. Your thoughts and ideas about that, or anything you want to share about our friend, are more than welcome.

Here's the place to suggest songs- the other thread's for the more technical stepfile discussion. Songs need to be short-ish or with short good parts we can lift out. And mostly danceable, though that needn't mean dance music per se. Variety would be nice.

So far we've got the following on our mp3 list, plus lots of maybes:

Ring of fire, Johnny Cash
Verbal, Amon Tobin
I thought I was your boyfriend, Magnetic Fields
Monster hit, Shpongle
The harder button to button, White Stripes

I just wanted to throw a shout out to the entire DDI team who brought such a wonderful invention into creation. It really was one of the most exiting things that happened to me at burning man. When you started me off with "The Never Ending Story" them song I just couldn't stop grinning. Hope to have the oppertunity to get blasted in the face with a flamethrower again.

Thanks all,

We're running the game Tuesday - Sunday (after the burn and after the temple burn), 10pm-ish to 2am-ish.

But wait, there's more!

We're also doing workshops. Yeah, part of that 24/hr interactivety thang. Check it.

IA Fire Art Series: Basic Flame Effects Class
wed, 12-2pm
Want to add fire to your art? Make your art car more noticeable, or just make drunk people go “Wooo!”? We’ll show you how! Class covers all aspects of making safe, effective, pretty flame effects, including examples. Emphasis on propane and the accumulator-type effect. Come prepared to take notes.

IA Fire Art Series: 2piR Poofer Workshop
wed, 3-5pm
A hands-on workshop where we’ll assemble an accumulator-type effect identical to those used by 2πr, which generate 20’ high percussive propane flames. Class size is very limited, so show up early.

IA Fire Art Series: Make a Poofer by FLG!

Meteor Workshop
fri, 12-2pm
Are you balls heavy? Are they connected together? The come let Jared and Musashii show you how to play with them. This workshop is for beginning and or advance meteor spinners.
Camp DDI Update

Our first meeting was Friday at NIMBY. We secured 4 new team members, which is great, but still short of what we need to bring DDI back to the playa. For a project of this magnitude - running the machine, creating a camp - we need people on board sooner rather than later. If you're considering your plans for burning man and Camp DDI is a possibility, then I'm encouraging you to follow up with us now and tell a friend.

Next meeting - Sunday brunch, April 9, NIMBY.

Dance Dance Immolation Returns!

And we need your help.

You want to make big DDI Fire at burning man 2006? You want to work hard, make first ever DDI camp, be part of DDI crew? Then you come to DDI camp meeting!

DDI was a sensation on the playa, but the small crew who made it and ran it suffered some, uh, burnout issues. Also, no one could find the damn thing. This year, we want solve both problems by putting DDI in its very own theme camp on the Esplanade. We figure we need about 25-30 members to run DDI and also, create a cozy lil' camp complete with kitchen, showers, and meals.

We're hosting a preliminary Camp DDI meeting at our workshop space, open to everyone, to discuss how this will all work and to recruit camp members. Newbies and veterans alike are welcom. Come by. Eat some pizza. Play with a flamethrower, see pictures of DDI from last year. You know you want it.

Friday, March 24th, 8pm
NIMBY - 1649 28th Street, Oakland

See www.interpretivearson.com/campddi for more details.

Sunday night DDI video?

I have this vague memory:

Burning Man 2005, Sunday night.

The temple has burned. We show up at DDI and haul out the projector and sound system, track down some 30-weight for the generator, and get things going. To our surprise, there are people camped at our gate, waiting to play. I don't know how long they've been there.

Only, the wind is high. The pilots won't stay lit. When they do, flamethrower ignition is... poor. It stays like this all night. We hang out in our jumpsuits, playing DDR, talking with friends, waiting for the wind to die.

I've come from one of the most insane two day periods of my life, having not slept since hours before the Man burned. On some level, I am very happy about this. I feel awake.

At some point, I walk some friends around the game, explaining how all the subsystems work, realizing once again what a complicated machine we've built. "Here are the towers that connect the air hose to the player. Here's the pressure switch that detects an lack of airflow. This is the main player effect shutoff valve. See how, with the system disarmed, this buzzer sounds? This is the main control electronics board. I don't know how it works. These are display effect accumulators. The pad arrows are sheets of 1/4" polycarbonate. There are 3/4" propane hoses buried here and here, feeding the player effect manifolds..."

It was strange, to wander around the site, to remember the whole months-long process through my sleep-deprived haze. My sweater sleeves sticking out of my jumpsuit, talking quickly and in a somewhat unfamiliar voice.

I recall, distantly, that in the group following me was a woman with a video camera. I didn't recognize her, but someone later mentioned that she might've been camped with/near Crashland Inn. I would really, really love to see that tape.

Decompression and beyond

Well, it looks like we won't bring DDI to decompression. Burning man was pretty enthusiastic about the idea of us having it there, actually, but they won't be able to tell us what the SF fire marshal says 'till the middle of this week. And space was an issue- DDI takes LOTS of space and space for fire art isn't very plentify at decomp. And finally as the day drew closer we started think about what it would be like to haul DDI over to SF, set it up, run it, and take it down all on a Sunday. We're just as happy not to.

BUT!

It seems quite possible that we'll run it at the NIMBY party only one week later. And anyway, y'all should come to that party whether we run DDI or not, it's gonna rock.

I don't even know all of you who worked so hard to pull this
off but I just wanted to tell you that while I was working the
gate on Thursday night I had a ton of people come and tell
me that DDI was their favorite thing on the Playa this year.
All of the players were excited and had a great time, even
those who had to wait over an hour.

Congrats again, you all pulled off an amazing feat!

Volunteer to run DDI on the playa!

Anyone who is interested can help us run this crazy thing on the playa. We have positions that require no advance training, some advance training, or a full battle run-down, take your pick.

Things we need volunteers for:

-Dressers: Potentially the flirtiest job. Put people in prox suits! You will be given very specific directions as to how to put the suits on correctly. Great opportunity to take advantage of folks' fear and put your hands down their pants. This takes training, as you need to know how to do it right.

-Gate/Signups: You have all the power. You sign up people to play. (Note: We're not really taking bribes and we're going to do signups in a pretty even-handed way, starting a round of signups at the top of the hour or half-hour). You are also in charge of explaining over and over and over that YES that's real fire and YES they can play and NO they can't play in a mumu and platforms. Minimal training, right at the beginning of your shift.

-Perimeter: You are our personal badass. Be a motherfucker. Be mean. Be angry. Be effective. Carry a radio and a big stick and poke at the ravers. No training required, just attitude.

-Ventillation/Sound hook-in: You will hook each player into the ventillation and sound system, and then you will look them square in the eye and say "good luck, don't be scared, and press the red button when you decide you are too much of a pansy to play." You're the last thing they see before the helmet is closed. Muaahahahhahaha. Probably also a really good opportunity to flirt and/or mess with people. Training required, in a minimal sort of way.

-Operator: Well, if you've built the system and you know EVERYTHING about it, you can be an operator. If someone really wants to do this, then come to NIMBY and live there for the next week, and you'll learn :)

Our core crew will likely bring 2-3 people per night. This means we need 3-4 volunteers per night, hopefully. Signups below!

It works- we finally managed to test it all at once, and it runs! Of course, we had a few problems to work through first, but in the end it was all there at once: two players with music and computer-controlled fire. Amazing!

Final test run this Saturday: now with FIRE!

Hey everyone...

So our last test run will be this coming Saturday, August 20th, in the evening. We know better than to give a time, but.. um.. when it's dark! When the fuel tanks are moved out into the courtyard! When we're done debugging!

Come by Saturday night if you want a chance to play. We estimate that anywhere from 100 to 250 people will be able to play on the playa, given time/fuel constraints. That's not very many. You run a higher chance of playing if you come Saturday!

Also, on the off chance you're not horribly busy with your own stuff, we can still use hands for carpentry, making signs, welding, etc. If you want to help, come by any evening after 6pm or any weekend day after 12 noon.

Seeya Saturday!

USB->Serial converter needed

Our system uses a USB->serial converter to communicate with some of the electronics in the control panel.

The one we had is cheapo and tends to die when we control noisy devices like the solenoid valves for the flamethrowers. The loaner we have now is ancient and appears to have driver problems. Apparently, good converters are hard to find.

Does anyone have a spare USB->Serial converter they'd be willing to part with today, at least for testing?

I was asked and I offered to be one of the playa DDI volunteers. I couldn't make it to that training day though. Is there some kind of signup page or has that whole thing fallen through? There are really only two evenings when I could do it, Tuesday or Friday and it would be nice to know which it's going to be ahead of time.

Thanks.

P.S. After having seen DDI at Nimby, I have to say that I'm really impressed with the level of quality and attention to detail that you guys are bringing to this project. Right on.

Looking for a couple speaker stands

So our speaker needs are met- some great BORG2 folks from Boise stepped forward to add to our sound system and we will definitely have enough sound now. But we're short a couple speaker stands- anybody have some they could lend us for the playa? I'm talking about the kind with a vertical pole that inserts into the socket on the base of a speaker. The socket on the speakers in question is 35mm(1 3/8") diameter.
We'll buy them if we have to, but since we don't own the speakers we're using them for it would seem better to borrow!

the nine tiers of DDI (priorities list)

So... right now, we're at roughly tier 4. The goal for the playa is to be somewhere between tiers 7 and 8. Anyone who can come help, or who sees tasks without a name next to them that they'd like to work on, please let us know! We'll be at NIMBY every evening this week, all weekend, and then some...

***

TIER 0 = ADDITIONAL NECESSARY ITEMS, MUST HAPPEN

Solicit on-playa volunteers - Morley

Get desktop up and running - Nicole

Screen

Build and test projector enclosure
-Wood box
-polycarb panel in front
-filters
-air supply from blower
-test for sufficient cooling and filtration
- openable

Generator fixed - Reed or Ian
Generator baffle box
Perimeter

Tank heating-
Finish sealing leaky water tub
Install water heater fixtures on tub (?) - Ian
Attach straps to tub to keep propane tanks from floating
Make a cover to minimize water evaporation from tub
Test water heater
Get white tanks - Morley

Procedures / rules / signs
Trailer for transportation - Nicole
Hitch ball for the truck
Plug for trailer lights - Ian or Reed's friend Scott

Order/get jumpsuits - Reed

** We need portable radios- shouting at each other across the width of
DDI wasn't working last night, certainly won't do on the playa.

TIER 1 = BASIC BARE BONES FUNCTIONALITY

One player DDR
No fire
Wall of flame
Support
Pilot burners
One more jacket and pair of gloves are in the mail

Electronics on the playa

So, I know how to build electronics. It turns out that I don't know how to build electronics for the harsh environment of generator power and spark ignitors and such. I think I understand how to solve that now, but I've taken this lesson to hear, and realized that what I don't know is what the playa does to home-built circuitry.

Does anyone out there have any experience taking custom electronics to the playa? What goes wrong? Are some construction techniques more reliable than others? What kinds of parts tend to fail?

I need to know the problems *before* we get out there.
Flaming Lotus Grrrls/Seemen fundraiser Saturday night at Cellspace

I can't go to it, so I need everyone else to go and give a little money, and take pix, and have fun for me :)

FLG and Seemen have been invited to Robodock in Amsterdam, and this is their fundraiser, as well as a potentially awesome art show in its own right. I'll have 3 or 4 pieces there, and they are raffling off one of my penny pieces. Kal said he'd make something to raffle too.

I'll be in Baltimore, so I'll have pix to share in a couple weeks too.

More info on the show is at http://www.qbox.org

Oh, and I think I'm sending a piece over to Robodock too!

No, not right away, to be sure. And not without the need to first overcome a seemingly endless stream of technical problems. I spent most of last night and lots of this afternoon about ready to bite someone's head off- ME! Can you believe it? But finally it worked. It was fun to play the crowd enjoyed it, and we've still got all of tomorrow night to run it!

Off to sleep.

DDI NEEDS your help today (Thursday) to happen at FAF!

Alright, we admit it - we didn't plan very well. We are all exhausted. I think we managed to get a *cumulative* 10 hours sleep last night between the four of us. Tonight we haven't slept yet.. it's 6:35 in the morning. Matt is at home sleeping (he got 2 hours last night).. Ian and Jonathan and I are still at NIMBY. I'm headed to bed for a few hours, then up to rent propane tanks...

We are *so* close. But we are worn to the bone and could really use some support.

>>>>Anyone who can come help load up at NIMBY, put things in trucks, screw fittings onto things, drill holes... we need you today!<<<<

We're here now and some portion of us will be awake until this thing hopefully goes over to the crucible and gets set up. If you can come help, please do! Call Jonathan at 415-570-1203 or Morley at 626.482.2974, or just come to NIMBY and ring the bell if the door's locked...

then an after party combined with the ranger social, some little tribe friends, michelle inviting flipside and dmv peeps, and whatever else we got.

can you wait til wed instead of kicking off on tues?

Thanks to everyone who came out yesterday! We had about 10 people total working on stuff. Extra thanks to Reed and Nicole who showed up to help us figure out gameplay and pad stuff (and to Nicole in particular for spending 3 hours getting pipe!). Also big thanks to everyone who slaved away at the electronics - not the most *fun* work, but very necessary!

We got a big chunk done - the operator control panel is nearing completion, the electronics boards are much further along, we have a working proxsuit gasket seal modification, the pad switches are in place, we have a design and parts for the screen stand, and the flamethrowers are about 70% complete.

We still need help today! Today's plan includes building the rest of the flamethrowers (plumbing and metalworking), assembling the screen stand out of pipe, finishing the electronics work, finishing the control panel, additional sewing/snapping of proxsuits, making wooden painted signs, and much more.

If you can come lend a hand, please do. NIMBY (www.nimbyspace.org) from now until the cows come home. If you need more info, call me on my celly: 626.482.2974. FOOD WILL BE PROVIDED!!

We were at NIMBY 'till sunup this morning trying to get this thing ready for FAF. We're desperately close! As a result of last night's marathon, we have an incredibly cool dance pad, an evil-looking set of nozzles ready to shoot fire in your face, and a mostly-completed control panel. Extra thanks to Reed and Nicole for all their help! Now if we can just resolve a few bugs, get a few last parts, and set the damn thing set up......

(new thread)

Reed suggests we all take a trip to the arcade to play DDR and get a feel for the arcade machines. I'm up for it. We did it once a while ago, but I could use a little refresher, and I want to see how the lights work and stuff.

The current suggestion is for Sunday, July 10, at either the Metreon or Sunnyvale Golf Land.

Spare a generator for FAF?

We're wondering if anyone has a nice QUIET generator they could lend DDI for the Fire Arts Festival? We've already got a generator for the playa, but it's noisy as hell and we need to build a box for it. It would be nice if we didn't have to do that before FAF.

We've also already got a nice quiet 2KW honda generator (EU2000), but it won't supply the whole project (the blower and projector are pretty hungry), so if we use it we need another similar one. Anyone got a spare?

Thanks!

CTP appreciation thread

OK, lots of people are helping us out but I just wanted to mention that CTP is being extra-super-helpful to DDI. He's bought pennies from us, made art for the raffle, machined parts for us, helped us get access to big tools, and told me how to buy a crucial part from a store that only sells to businesses. There's probably more I've forgotten.

Thanks, CTP!

Wanna help me build pads today?

I'm looking for someone (or someones) who has time to come to NIMBY this afternoon or evening and help me build dance pads. I finally have all the parts, and I would really, really, really appreciate some extra hands! :)

At this point, there's a fair bit of quite repetitive but also rather precise metalwork to do. Specifically:

measuring for holes in the (steel) frames
drilling the holes
welding nuts into the holes
grinding those welds flat
welding springs to brackets
welding the brackets to the frames
welding adjusting nut brackets in place
cutting polycarbonate (if I can get a table saw today -- we'll see if the library still has one)
cutting corner brace spacers

If you don't weld or you're out of practice, that's totally fine. What I really need is someone who can help with the drilling (it's a lot of holes... like 60 or 70 of them per pad). If you're not familiar with how to drill holes in metal, I can teach you in a couple minutes. Eye and ear protection will be provided, as required. :)

Matt and I will be at Pick 'n Pull til maybe 3-4pm, and we'll be at NIMBY after that. If you're free and want to help out, give Matt's cell a call: 510-672-0735. We have internet there too, so you can also send a tribe message if you feel like it, and I'll get it.

July 10: Field trip, work day, or both?

Hey everyone! I'm back from Sri Lanka and ready to buckle down and get this bitch workin'.

In talking with Ian, Matt & Jonathan, I've deduced something quite important: HOLY SHIT we have a lot of work to do before FAF!

In the spirit of HOLY SHIT I would like to bring to the table the subject of July 10th. I know plans have been set in motion for an arcade trip to Milpitas. It appears that at least the core DDI crew may have to bail on that to work on the game at NIMBY instead.

If other folks still want to go to the arcade and practice, they are more than welcome. Another option is you can come to NIMBY and play on *our* pad when it's finished (or, if nothing else, on Morley's softpad). This will allow you to get a feel for the game for free if you've never played. It's not like in the arcade, but hey, there are arrows and music and shit.. and you can dance to bananaphone!

So: Field trip, work day, or both? Thoughts?

It's nice to be back.. ahhh the smell of propane..

i wish i'd taken a picture. alas, i didn't have my camera with me at the time. but i'll describe it for you...

i'm walking down the street in columbo with some of my compatriots from engineers without borders. we're in the industrial/manufacturing part of town, talking to suppliers about building materials. (we're building schools for tsunami orphans).

on the sidewalk, there's a kid maybe 15 years old. he has a mig welder out, old and battered and scary looking. he's welding something on the sidewalk, i'm not sure what. wearing no welding mask and no gloves, barefoot, wearing a lungi/wraparound/sarong and no shirt. he's dirty and skinny and he has this HUGE smile on his face.

it made me think of ian :)

Who Plays DDR? Who's New?

While we've been talking about picking out songs and working on stepfiles, I've been wanting to ask:

Who here has tried DDR before in the arcade or at home? Who's played more than a little bit?

Who's totally new?

If folks who have played before: What difficulty level do you play on? What's hard for you (offbeat steps, freeze arrows, etc)? What's fun?

Folks who are new: Any particular reason you haven't tried it? What would make DDR more approachable to you?

DDI is going to be made out of stuff. We'll buy the stuff if we have to, but first we want to try to scrounge it, since it leaves more room in the budget to make this project really fucking cool.

Here's our (partial) shopping list. If you have any of this stuff and you're willing to donate it (or sell it cheap!) we'll be your best friend!

twelve (12) automotive spark coils
barbed wire
t-stakes
lined, aluminized proximity suits (hey, you never know)
plywood
2x4's
heavy duty extension cords, lots of them
reasonably bright video projector (yeah, right)
self-powered speakers
subwoofer
propane
fluorescent lights/fixtures (2)
garden gate for perimeter fence
USB hub
512 mb USB flash disk
incandescent lightbulbs (20)
incandescent light fixtures/sockets (20)
100lb propane tanks
20lb propane tanks for accumulators
med. sized utility trailer, 500lb max tongue weight - can be BORROWED!
stands for lights
high-pressure propane hose, 1/4", 1/2", or 3/8"
lighting gels, esp. red, orange, and blue
black and yellow paint
candy beads, bits of colorful fabric, and pacifiers (to decorate the perimeter!)
a USB joystick/joypad we can take apart
aluminum diamond plate

DDR stepfile discussion

This thread is to continue a discussion we started via email with Reed and Nicole, talking about the best way to go about generating stepfiles for the DDI-specific songs we're going to choose. Nicole will be making the files.

The story so far, in a nutshell:

Standard duration for DDR songs is 90 seconds or thereabouts, we >can< do longer if we want to but Reed recommends that we not, especially since each game will be three songs long (standard).

Since most songs out there are longer than that, trimming will be needed. If this just means editing mp3s then there are probably a bunch of people (myself included) who could do it.

Difficulty: Standard DDR songs come with four difficulty levels. I suggested we could get away with two. Not all songs will be good for all players (beginners vs. experts) but as long as we have something for everyone we should do fine. I recommend we err on the side of too easy, since even experienced players will be dancing in a rather, ummm, unusual situation. Plus, we'll be able to fuck with people in different ways to make it arbitrarily hard.

All the conclusions above are subject to the results of actual testing, so I think we don't want to get too many stepfiles made until testing confirms that chosen song durations, difficulties and so on are working well. This may mean that we use mostly built-in songs at the FAF, which would be fine. The FAF incarnation of DDR will be operational and safe but relatively basic since we've only got a month to finish it.

DDI Pad Design

So I've recently gotten all into DDR home hard pad design. I'm rebuilding a halfassed hand made wood and metal pad from the first wave of home DDR crap. So far, I've found some stuff I like about it and some stuff I hate, and I'm working on a design of my own.

I figure I can share what I learn with y'all.

Can I get some info on the current design of the DDI pad? Morley, did you say you were going with a foil/foam design?

I'm working on a setup that uses these switches:
http://www.itcelectronics.com/pdtl.asp?P=3777

Probably either 2 or 4 per panel, not sure how many will be needed yet. They have them at Frys for about $6.

As far as the carpentry, I'm looking at a modified version of this design:
http://web.archive.org/web/20020106145101/www.super-crush.com/ddr/v2gal.html
Corrected, as the arrow spacing on that one is wrong.

Comments? Infor on the current DDI design? Where are you with that?

Cheers,
Reed.

We're looking for a projector guru

So we're looking for someone who can advise us on video projector stuff, because if we don't get some experienced opinions on this item we could make a costly mistake. We want to know us how powerful a projector must be to throw a bright image 15 feet across, where we can borrow such a thing for testing and use at the Fire Arts Festival, and where to buy one used and relatively cheaply for the playa. And, of course, we need to know if any of the above needs are completely unrealistic.

People project all sort of stuff out at the playa, so the experience we need must be floating around somewhere. If you have any leads, please let me know!

DDI at the Fire Arts Festival

I heard back from The Crucible yesterday, and it sounds like we'll be running DDI at the Fire Arts Festival in Oakland next month, pending approval from the fire marshall. They seem to think they'll be able to convince OFD to let us do this, and if anyone can do it, they can.

Details on FAF are here:
http://www.thecrucible.org/calendar/faf_05.html

So, I guess we better hurry up and build this thing... :)

THANK YOU ALL! What an amazing evening!

Thank you EVERYONE for sharing your time, your knowledge, your art, your food, your energy, your music, your booty and your money to support our noble cause of bringing burnination and bad J-pop to the masses.

When we were planning this party, we aimed to raise between $1500 and $2000. We figured that the most we'd ever raise, in our wildest dreams if we *really* rocked it, was $3000.

I am ecstatic and thrilled and GIDDY to announce that we raised... *drumroll please*...

THREE THOUSAND AND FORTY EIGHT DOLLARS AND EIGHTY CENTS!
$3048.80! $3048.80!!!! MORE THAN OUR HIGHEST ESTIMATES!

The party itself pulled in almost $5000 in cash from bar, door and raffle. (Before subtracting expenses). 5Gs, baby!

And just as importantly, we had a goddamn BLAST doing it! I never imagined I would have that much fun at a party I was so stressed and anxious about. The fact that I was able to truly enjoy myself was due in large part to the *amazing* work everyone did to help make the party happen and happen LARGE!

Once again, THANK YOU for helping us fulfill our goal to make this project a reality.

Just to get a little nostalgic.. when I was sitting in my brother's living room in Boston last December, talking on AIM with Ian saying "Yeah, that's my next project, fire DDR!" I didn't even remotely imagine it would have such an awesome amount of support.

You are all very, very fucked up people who do very, very fucked up things and I respect and love the hell out of you for it.

I want to get my thanks in before I collapse- that went really, really, well and was incredibly fun! We couldn't have done it without all you volunteers, there were all sorts of things we hardly had to think about because we had good people doing it for us. And thanks to everyone who came and gave us money- we took in pretty much enough to build the whole project!

DDI & BORG2 Election Return Night

As you guys know, the BORG2 Art Vote will end on the night between Saturday and Sunday, no earlier than midnight, at about the time I stumble back home from the DDI fundraiser sober enough to turn off the voting.

So, I had a better idea. How about we make the DDI fundraiser the official BORG2 election return night as well? Instead of doing it all alone at home in my underwear, we could have some kind of closing ceremony at the fundraiser where I turn off the vote after midnight and then get flamed or something.

This might attract a larger BORG2 crowd to the fundraiser. And since BORG2 doesn't have anything going on that night and I am in charge of running the voting site and I am going to be at the Cracktory anyway, I don't think they will object.

What do you think?

I thought I was donating two of them.

There's the one in the picture on the raffle items page which Michelle picked up last night, and another that I am working on installing a light in (it'll be a surprise :) that I finally got working last night.

Unless you don't want two of them :)

Anyway, let me know - I think their both pretty cool, even though only one of them is illuminated.

Is there someone in charge of orientating and training volunteers? When I did a simple door shift at False Profit, there was someone in charge of briefing me, so I don't think this is such a bad / strange idea...

Yo! So the way we're hoping to organize the food stuff is to have volunteers take on the responsibility of bringing one flaming dish to feed 10 - 30 people.

Ideas? Volunteers? Suggestions?

**

Confirmed:

Matt The Advantage and his Miraculous Flaming Tower of Pudding
Ian and his Evil Flamethrowing Cake of Doom
Flaming Drinks at the bar (anyone want to design these?)

Tentative:

Seductive Heather and her Crispy Creme Brulee (set with a welding torch)
Adrian Fox and his Foxxxy Crepes Suzette
Costello and his Tasty.... Anything he wants to volunteer!
Bar Wishlist

This thread is just for things needed by the bar. I am also including the people who said they would bring things too.

Glasses - Platypus Man
Cocktail Shakers - Matt, CTP and Marc
Coolers or big plastic tubs - this is for holding ice, bottled water, and ice for drinks. So they need to be clean. We'll need at least 4 (2 for each bar).

And Morley requested that if people could bring a bag or two of ice when then arrive, that would help out a lot. There's nothing worse than a warm drink at a flaming party.

i just remembered to put music on my list of things to bring to the cracktory on friday. it would really suck if i forgot to pull records and had to cross the bridge again on saturday.

so what's the sound setup? will there be both turntables and cd decks in the downstairs area?

A Poetic Interlude

I understand that this is a very busy time for DDI, and thought a respite from your art in other art might be in order. Here's a poem from a kindered spirit:

I blew up the plums
that were in the icebox
and which you were probably saving for breakfast
forgive me
I like fire

Compressor?

Anyone have an air compressor we could borrow for the party? It doesn't have to be very big.

The deal is that the first bits of software and hardware for DDI are coming along, and if we had a compressor we could SHOOT PEOPLE with blasts of air when they fuck up while playing. If we shine a bright orange light in their face while firing, that might also be fun.

Matt also suggested hair dryers ;)

I'm here at NIMBY with Matt & Ian having a DDI fundraiser & project day.

Ian's building a fuckin' SCARY looking huge 4-tiered platform for the fire spewing cake, and Matt is working on a tower for his TEN count them TEN flaming alcohol-drenched puddings.

I talked to the sound guy this morning, and we're going to have an awesome setup in both rooms. We have the security all set, and the portapotties all lined up.

The DJ lineup is almost totally finalized too!

And the bar, oh the bar! We will have one! And it will have alcohol!

My next task is to get the raffle website up so we can start pre-selling tickets.

I'm starting to believe we'll actually get a good turnout, and I know that it will be an amazing party regardless of who's there :)

YAAAAY!!!!

-morley

(who is also excited cuz she is DONE with grad school! DONE DONE DONE!)

here are the places that we are posting the announcement so far:
-borg2 bullhorn
(i am going to e-mail frank and see if he'll do a special announcement since DDI are the poster children for borg2 grants)
-jackrabbit speaks
-squidlist
-3playa
-gigdirectory.net

i am also posting to several e-mail lists and various tribes such as SF burner events, the treehouse, etc.

we could use help with the following:
**please note - we have different text for posting in different places depending on how "public" the listing is. for instance, the JRS post does not mention the bar or the address. posts to private or small tribes and small community e-mail lists can show the address & bar info. i will post the different versions here.

-anyone on the burning man e-playa who could post there?

-i e-mailed a friend who's on myspace to see if he can post to the burning man groups there. anyone here on myspace or any of the other community websites who can post in appropriate places?

-matt has flyers you can take to whatever parties you're going to this weekend.

-please post in whatever tribes/e-mail lists you feel appropriate and send the announcement to all your friends.

-any other ideas???

it would be really great if we could fill the place up (250-300 people). more money & more fun. weeeee!!

Signups for bartending and door time slots...

Hey guys, I think we should start a signup for bartending and door. I'm thinking 2 hour shifts will be easy to keep track of. (If you want to limit the length, please say so! I'm just guessing..)

So...

BARTENDING - 4 PEOPLE PER SHIFT (2 people per bar, 2 bars)

9pm - 11pm:
11pm - 1am:
1am - 3am:
3am - 5am (one bar only):

DOOR - 2 PEOPLE PER SHIFT

9pm - 11pm
11pm - 1am
1am - 3am

I don't think we need to keep the door open past 3am. In fact, should we close it earlier..?

Note: Tracey wants to both DJ *and* bartend/door.. she should have first crack at shifts once we set the DJ lineup. We're working on that and should have the music schedule ironed out soon.
